Joyce
has been a muralist most of her adult life, stopping along the way to
own a hotel, be a costume designer and study cultural anthropology and
journalism. The fact that she now finds herself within the small circle
of artists who specialize in Marian art is a surprise. She began to
carve the Madonna over fifteen years ago and now can’t imagine not
doing it for the rest of her life.
There are many hundreds of walls, both exterior and interior that have
been transformed by Joyce and a few of them are here in her new home in
the San Luis Valley where she is being called more and more to paint the
Madonna. Perhaps it is only natural that a woman named Mary Christine at
birth should be drawn to an art form that is more like a devotion.
Joyce doesn’t take herself too seriously though. She always finds time
to create delightful angels and birds, imps and fanciful creatures out
of wood and branches that fall from her husband’s saw. Joyce sees
beauty and fun in these bits that used to go into the wood stove. Now
these figures are collected all over the world.
Forest Tango Art Works is also the home of WaterMelon Moon Folk Art
Publishing. Joyce’s many murals, screens and paintings are transformed
into prints and cards. This year WaterMelon Moon is publishing a line of
cards with images from Terry’s carvings. Many WaterMelon Moon cards
have been created by popular request.
Come see for yourself why Forest Tango is called a wonderland of folk
art. If you can’t visit us in person, send us an e-mail and we will
make every attempt to answer any questions you have.
