Shown here are just a few of Terry’s recent sculptures. The angels and patron saints he carves are usually half to life size or more although he sometimes sculpts tabletop figures to order. The other carvings… whimsical bears to fiercely lifelike eagles and hawks, fantasy figures and children… are usually one quarter to life size or more. When he gets an inspiration to create a figure he doesn’t always find the time to get right on it, but the idea simmers and when he does start a new piece he is almost always surprised at the size the piece wants to be. Terry does not force the sculpture. It becomes. Like many artists throughout the ages, he finds that he merely translates what is already there. The figure is within and he sets it free.

Terry begins a sculpture by using a chainsaw to rough it out. He sometimes finds it difficult to cut away the beautiful wood, finding much beauty in the grain and bark, but he knows that within the branch or trunk of a tree there is a harmony of form that is brought to life inch by inch. He uses knives and gouges to carve and refine what the chainsaw begins. He does not use small rotary tools for detail, preferring to see the marks the hand tools make.

Terry is an easygoing man who likes to make people happy with his work and never rushes through a sculpture. Forest Tango Art Works isn’t just a studio where he works; it is where he makes his home. This is where the figures he carves are given life and when you visit Forest Tango you are invited to make yourself comfortable and be part of the process.
